Tree Marking Volunteer Day

Join Us for a Volunteer Day to Mark Hemlock Trees!

Join us for an adventure to protect old-growth hemlock trees from the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). This hands-on tree-marking event offers an opportunity to help prepare the hemlock trees for 2025 treatment. The day begins with a thorough safety orientation covering navigation techniques and emergency protocols. From there, we’ll take you to a hemlock forest site, where you'll receive guidance in the field and get introduced to the tools and skills needed for effective tree-marking.

What to Expect:

🌲 Tree-Marking Activities: Get hands-on experience assessing tree health, measuring tree diameters (DBH), marking trees with flagging tape, tagging them, and recording information for our data base.
🤝 Community Connection: Join others who share an interest in conservation and back country navigation.
🌿 Explore Nature’s Wonders: Enjoy the breathtaking beauty of protected old-growth forests, pristine wilderness, and majestic towering hemlocks.

Who Can Join:

This event welcomes all Hemlock Heroes, their friends, and anyone eager to support hemlock conservation efforts. Whether you’re a seasoned tree-marker or new to the field, there’s a place for everyone. The activities involve hiking, navigating uneven terrain in isolated areas and working at a steady pace, so participants should be comfortable spending extended time outdoors.

What to Bring:

❄️ Winter Attire: Dress for winter with extra layers and warm/waterproof, and sturdy boots. Fingered gloves are ideal for tool handling, and snowshoes are encouraged if conditions require.
💧 Water: Bring 2–4 liters of water and a thermos with your favorite hot beverage.
🍴 Food: Pack a lunch and snacks.

Additional Information:

Registered participants will receive an email two days before the event with essential updates, including the exact location, weather forecast, and other important details.
