TREE MARKING & TREATMENT DAYS
Treatment Days
Treatment Days consist of Tree Injection treatments, requiring a large team, or Basal Bark treatments that require smaller groups.
Note: To participate in the treatment days, volunteers must have completed Hemlock Hero training at Pollard's Falls in fall 2022, finished Hemlock Heroes training during June-July 2023, or previously volunteered at Sporting Lake. Additionally, we extend an invitation to all new Hemlock Heroes who attended the 2024 training on May 4th and June 15th to join us in the field!
Tree Marking Days
Tree Marking Days require preparing hemlock forests for treatments. Tasks involve measuring tree diameters, flagging trees, and evaluating trees suitable for treatment in 1 ha treatment blocks.
Note: Volunteers without prior Hemlock Hero training are welcome to participate in tree marking days and will receive on-site guidance and training. While everyone is welcome to participate, it's important to note that this kind of work can be physically demanding. Prospective volunteers must be well-prepared and capable of navigating challenging terrain in a fast-paced environment.

Tree Marking Volunteer Day
Join Us for a Volunteer Day to Mark Hemlock Trees!
Join us for an adventure to protect old-growth hemlock trees from the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). This hands-on tree-marking event offers an opportunity to help prepare the hemlock trees for 2025 treatment. The day begins with a thorough safety orientation covering navigation techniques and emergency protocols. From there, we’ll take you to a hemlock forest site, where you'll receive guidance in the field and get introduced to the tools and skills needed for effective tree-marking.
What to Expect:
🌲 Tree-Marking Activities: Get hands-on experience assessing tree health, measuring tree diameters (DBH), marking trees with flagging tape, tagging them, and recording information for our data base.
🤝 Community Connection: Join others who share an interest in conservation and back country navigation.
🌿 Explore Nature’s Wonders: Enjoy the breathtaking beauty of protected old-growth forests, pristine wilderness, and majestic towering hemlocks.
Who Can Join:
This event welcomes all Hemlock Heroes, their friends, and anyone eager to support hemlock conservation efforts. Whether you’re a seasoned tree-marker or new to the field, there’s a place for everyone. The activities involve hiking, navigating uneven terrain in isolated areas and working at a steady pace, so participants should be comfortable spending extended time outdoors.

Hemlock Hero Training Event
Join us for a hemlock hero training event!
Become a Hemlock Hero and help preserve our old-growth hemlock forests! Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is an invasive insect threatening these vital ecosystems, and with your help, we can protect these majestic trees for generations to come.
Why Become a Hemlock Hero?
By joining our Hemlock Hero training event, you will:
Contribute to Conservation: Protect hemlock forests that are essential for maintaining biodiversity, providing wildlife habitat, and preserving the ecological balance in our forests.
Gain Valuable Knowledge: Learn about pesticide safety, application techniques, and the science behind combating HWA. Our experienced Strike Team will guide you through every step, ensuring you have the skills needed to make a real difference.
Join a Community of Conservationists: Upon completing the training, you’ll have the opportunity to sign up for volunteer positions and join our dedicated strike team in the field. You’ll be working alongside like-minded individuals who share your passion for environmental stewardship.
What to Expect
This hands-on training event will begin with an in-class session and continue outdoors, where you’ll experience the challenges and rewards of fieldwork firsthand. Please come prepared for a full day of activities:
Clothing & Footwear: Dress in layers suitable for varying weather conditions. Sturdy, waterproof boots are recommended, as we may be working in wet or uneven terrain.
Food & Water: Bring enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day, along with lunch and snacks to keep your energy up.
Safety Considerations: Please note that this work involves the use of pesticides. We’ll cover all necessary safety precautions during the training to ensure everyone is protected.
