Volunteer Hemlock Treatment Day

  • MCFC Hemlock Conservation Office 9853 Nova Scotia Trunk 8 Caledonia, NS, B0T 1B0 Canada (map)

Join us for a day of volunteering to conserve old-growth hemlock trees!

Get ready for an exciting adventure in the woods as we work together to protect our hemlock trees from the invasive Hemlock Wooly Adelgid (HWA)! Meet the passionate Strike Team at the Hemlock Conservation office in Caledonia, where we'll have a brief safety overview and kick off the day with transportation to one of our beautiful forest sites.

What to Expect:

  • Firsthand Conservation experience: Experience using basal bark spraying methods to treat hemlock trees. If the weather has other plans, we will switch to stem injection techniques or mark areas for future treatment.

  • Community Building: Connect with fellow nature enthusiasts and enjoy the camaraderie of working together to make a real difference.

  • Explore remote old-growth Forests: Embrace the challenge of navigating scenic, yet rugged terrain. This is your chance to get off the beaten path and be a hero for our hemlock trees!

Who Can Join:

  • Hemlock Heroes: All volunteers need to have Hemlock Hero training. This ensures everyone is ready for the physically demanding tasks and safe pesticide use.

What to Bring:

  • Water: Pack 3 - 4 Litres (or more!) of water to keep hydrated.

  • Food: Bring a packed lunch and plenty of snacks to keep you fueled up for the day.

  • Outdoor Wear: Wear appropriate clothing for a forest setting (long sleeve shirt, long pants, sturdy footwear, and a bug net/bug spray).

Additional Details:

We’ll provide all the specifics and requirements closer to the volunteering date, ensuring you're fully prepared for a day of fun and meaningful work in nature.
